If you’re anything like me, you’ve been feeling out of sorts these past few days, which is totally understandable. I’d like to offer some solace, a virtual hug, and to share a poem from my book, “Won’t Be Silent - Don’t Stop ‘til It Matters.”
I’ve been feeling a void and need to renew the vows I made to myself when I wrote these words, remembering how much they helped me all those years ago. It was a confusing time in my life and hopefully these same words will, once again, refresh my perspective in this current moment of uncertainty. Remember, this too shall pass!
In Search of Happiness
Written November 1988 - 1:00 am - San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
We’ve all set out to conquer worlds,
Both known to us and new.
And all of us suit up in armor,
But the ones who win are few.
It’s the chosen few I salute, ‘Cause I’ve been one to lose.
Then, sinking deep inside myself, And cried and cried the blues.
Until one day, I woke up,
And realized my battle was won.
For I was here and still alive,
And saw there was much to be done.
So, I set out on my new search, Out of darkness into the day.
And realized all I needed was God,
And he would show me the way.
Not that he would do my work, For I knew it was up to me.
Belief in God as spiritual growth, Is what would set me free.
Now I knew that I must seek happiness,
Which became a journey within.
Dancing through time, mostly gone by,
To evaluate what was under this skin.
I feared the fear I felt inside,
I cried ‘cause I’d lost several years.
And like a man who’s lost his pride,
I shed a million tears.
And so, I did, and the pain was lifted,
And I smiled with joy ‘cause I’d been gifted.
By a light that shone through the big dark cloud.
I was ready now to join the crowd.
I realized now that I had reason,
To bask in the glory of my new season.
All I had to do was take each day,
And live it well, so I could say…
That tomorrow is only going to be this great,
If I do today what I don’t hate.
My two edicts are: “Life is choice” and “That which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
Peace…ABE
